In this episode of Art Speaks, we meet Guan Huixue, who is deeply rooted in Songzhuang. A member of the Chinese Artists Association and Vice Chairman of the Tongzhou Artists Association, he has devoted half his life to art. He studied fine arts at Tongzhou No.4 Middle School under traditional Chinese painting master Guo Dumin, then pursued oil painting at Capital Normal University. With a passion for watercolor, he also learned from Professor Guo De’an.His works focus on everyday life: teacups, fruits, household objects and birds on branches. On the small surface of a fan, he paints the fullness of daily existence, inscribing an artistic life of warmth and ease.
Since moving your studio to Songzhuang, how has its rich artistic atmosphere specifically influenced your work and inspired you?
The biggest change after moving from the cultural club to Songzhuang is the revitalization of my creative ecosystem. I used to work in quiet solitude, but now, surrounded by a community of artists, daily exchanges and interactions constantly spark new creative ideas. My state of mind has grown more peaceful. I can not only reflect on myself but also infuse the vivid vibrancy of daily life around me into my brushwork. While maintaining a fresh and elegant foundation, my works have gained more of the warmth and spirit of contemporary everyday life.
Your small-sized traditional Chinese paintings are fresh and elegant. Within Songzhuang’s diverse and inclusive art ecosystem, how do you understand the relationship between the roots of traditional ink painting and innovation in contemporary art?
Songzhuang is fertile ground for art, where diverse cultures blend and thrive, full of freedom and vitality. For me, traditional ink and wash are the root, not a restriction. My creations are grounded in traditional techniques, pursuing a fresh and elegant style — this is both a commitment to my cultural heritage and a distinct personal expression. Creation and inheritance are one: inheritance nourishes creation, and creation renews inheritance. Only by upholding integrity while innovating can art maintain its eternal vitality.
You have dedicated decades to art and taught many students. Songzhuang is also a place where young artists pursue their dreams. What message would you give to the younger generation coming here to chase their dreams?
Persistence is the most valuable thing on the path of art. For young people chasing their dreams in Songzhuang, I believe laying a solid foundation is essential. Great achievements come from deep accumulation; never seek quick success. Learn widely from the excellence around you, yet stay true to your heart. In a restless world, learn to embrace solitude. Only through steady, daily accumulation will your works gain depth, and your artistic journey go far and steady.
If you ask Guan Huixue what he holds fast to, he might not find the words. He simply paints day after day, capturing the scenery around him and the breeze of his hometown stroke by stroke. In an era that rushes ever faster, he lower his head and paints slowly, creating a world where one can pause and rest.
Art speaks softly, and the traces of water and ink linger on. Every brushstroke of watery color is a ripple spreading across time; every touch of reserved white space is the silent echo of a feeling heart. May the grass and trees in his paintings remain forever vivid, and may those ordinary scenes captured by his brush breathe softly on the paper, year after year, giving off their quiet fragrance.
